This May the 4th, your favorite Star Wars heroes and villains are taking over Disney+ in celebration of Star Wars Day. Beginning today, subscribers will see a limited-time takeover including a new startup screen, an immersive homepage, a curated collection of fan-favorite Star Wars titles, and all-new poster artwork for the live-action Star Wars films.
To bring this experience to life, Disney+ product designers reimagined the visual identity of the app to create a cohesive, themed journey for fans. We caught up with the team to learn more about their approach.
What was the goal behind the Star Wars Day takeover experience?
We wanted to celebrate May the 4th on Disney+ by creating an environment that introduces, connects, and truly immerses users into the Star Wars galaxy. From the moment you sign in to browsing for something to watch, the franchise unfolds to guide both new fans and die-hards through the experience seamlessly.
How did the team approach designing something that feels fresh but still true to Star Wars?
We looked closely at iconic visual elements from the Star Wars universe, like color, lighting, composition, and of course, the characters, and used those as a foundation. Our theme this year was the eternal conflict between the light and the dark, and we chose to evoke the tone and atmosphere of Star Wars in a way that works natively within the Disney+ interface.
What details are you most excited for fans to notice?
I am most excited for fans to find the hidden motifs tucked into the design. We wanted to honor every generation of the franchise, so whether you grew up with the original trilogy or the sequels, you will see familiar faces like Princess Leia and Grogu woven throughout. These subtle details, paired with the fresh pop of the updated poster artwork, bring the experience to life in a way that invites longtime fans to look a little closer while encouraging new audiences to start their own journey of discovery.
