For the past two weekends, 20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2 has topped the global box office, earning nearly $440 million to date — proof that charismatic characters and covetable couture never go out of style. But before stars Meryl Streep, future Disney Legend Anne Hathway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci ever set foot on set, filmmakers pulled a number of items from the Walt Disney Archives, which served both as an inspiration and a direct connection to the iconic feature film The Devil Wears Prada (2006).
“Here at the Walt Disney Archives, our mission is to collect, preserve, and share the remarkable history of The Walt Disney Company. And as the company has grown to include new brands and stories, like those from 20th Century Studios, the collection of the Archives has evolved and expanded as well,” Joanna Pratt, Director, Operations & Business Strategy, Walt Disney Archives, said, adding, “Costuming is quite literally the fabric of the [The Devil Wears Prada‘s] storytelling, helping to capture the world of high fashion while also revealing the personalities and transformation of the film’s starring characters.”
In this episode of Inside the Walt Disney Archives, Pratt and The Devil Wears Prada 2 costume designer Molly Rogers, each shared how signature pieces — including unforgettable wardrobe staples like the cerulean sweater — represent more than style; they capture character, enhance storytelling, and define moments in pop culture history.
