Disney Announces $2 Million Commitment to Hurricane Sandy Relief and Rebuilding Efforts

By David Gill, The Walt Disney Company

Our thoughts are with those who are continuing to deal with the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Today, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced a $2 million cash commitment to the relief and rebuilding efforts for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

He shared, “It’s hard to fathom the utter devastation from this storm. Thousands of people in the hurricane’s path lost everything and face the daunting challenge of putting their lives and communities back together. We hope this helps provide immediate aid needed to get through this disaster and begin the road to recovery.”

One million dollars will be donated to the American Red Cross for immediate assistance, and another $1 million will be designated for organizations working on rebuilding efforts. Also, employee donations to nonprofits involved in disaster relief will be matched, dollar for dollar, by Disney Employee Matching Gifts: A Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation.

In addition to financial support, public service announcements will run on ABC, ABC.com, ABCNews.com, Radio Disney and ESPN’s family of networks to encourage viewers to support Red Cross relief efforts. Disney Channel will also continue to air a spot—previously shared here on the blog— that helps families prepare for disasters and other emergencies.

Today's announcement is part of Disney's ongoing disaster preparedness and response program. As a proud sponsor of the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program, Disney provides support for disaster relief services, as well as comfort and hope to children in impacted communities.

We just enjoyed a family Disney World trip last month. We have such great memories and pictures, that we spent time during the storm looking at the pics and laughing. It was great to take the kids minds off the howling winds. Still no power, but we are safe! We appreciate all your help during and now after the storm!

I heard this And I'm very thankful for the help Disney is giving. I vacation at Seaside Heights/Park every year and have a thought, wouldn't it be great if Disney could rebuild the Amusement Piers in Seaside Heights with a Disney Theme. I think it would benefit everyone.

Dear Mr. Iger, We as NJ thank you. As we Rising Stars Dance Academy will be visiting your most wonderful place on earth next week. We will be dancing on Friday nov 9th in downtown at 11am and 12pm in memory of lost ones here in NJ. Many people lost everything they own, many people were spared. We will have a family with us that had lost everything. We will help her as best as we can to support her in any way. Your companies donation will help people like her. Support in time of need and rebuild what was lost. And again thank you for your help and support here in NJ.

We here in NJ really appreciate your support! It's really great to know that you guys care, especially when I'm going to Disney this month. By the way, a group of friends, along with myself, are also trying to help the cause by selling t-shirts with proceeds going to shelters, foodbanks, etc. Thanks again!
