By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
The Avengers are not only saving the day in their comic book stories, they are also bringing comfort and joy to hundreds of children in hospitals across the United States. In honor of Compassion Month, Disney and Marvel teamed up with Child Life Council (CLC) to develop a limited-edition comic book for young patients in an effort to provide entertainment and normalcy during their hospital stay. The story—developed by fan-favorite writer Jim Zub and penciler Wellinton Alves, among others—features Avengers Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Falcon as they assemble to battle alien invader Fin Fang Foom. These mighty Super Heroes show readers that anything is possible with teamwork.

Disney Teams Up with KaBOOM! on New Playground in McFarland, California

By Janelle Tipton, The Walt Disney Studios
It started out as a few concrete slabs and a mountain of mulch in the middle of a grass and dirt tract running along Highway 99 in the heart of Central California’s agricultural corridor. But in just five-and-a-half hours on a bright Sunday in mid-February, the town of McFarland had a new playground, thanks to a team effort by hundreds of Disney VoluntEARS, partners from nonprofit KaBOOM! and members of the McFarland community.

By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
We’ve covered Disney’s long-standing relationship with Make-A-Wish® on Disney Post, but you may be wondering how Disney and Make-A-Wish work together—and have for nearly 35 years—to make wishes come to life for children with life-threatening medical conditions, nearly 100,000 times since 1980. A part of the answer is through dedicated Disney VoluntEARS like Russell Dott from The Walt Disney Studios. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Takes Steps Towards an Eco-Friendly Future

By Rachel Green, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts
Last week, the Disneyland Resort was honored with a Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award, California’s highest environmental honor, for waste-reduction efforts. The program distinguishes organizations that are leaders in environmental stewardship and that make notable efforts to conserve California’s natural resources. Over the last 10 years, the Disneyland Resort has doubled the amount of waste diverted from landfills, and is working toward the long-term goal of achieving Zero Waste—a distinction already awarded to Circle D Corral at Disneyland park. In addition to recycling paper, cardboard, plastics and metal, Circle D Corral composts all animal waste, hand towels, laundry lint and coffee grounds from Disneyland Resort restaurants.

Disney Friends for Change Grants Inspire Creativity Among Young Change-Makers

By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
There’s a common theme in making a difference—creativity. Whether you’re looking to protect the planet, help your community or promote healthy behaviors, your creative ideas can inspire your friends and peers to lend their skills, interests and talents to create a brighter tomorrow. Disney Friends for Change, too, is committed to supporting young leaders in pursuit of making their communities greener, safer, smarter, healthier, cleaner and fairer. Their annual grants program, through a collaboration with leading youth organization Youth Service America, will provide $500 grants to help young dreamers and doers make a lasting, positive change in the world. Projects and initiatives taking place on or around Global Youth Service Day (April 17–19) will highlight the creativity and commitment of young people who work to meet the needs of others.

Disney Employees Help Sea Turtles Return to Their Natural Habitat

By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
Recently, Disney Animal Programs cast members from Epcot’s The Seas with Nemo & Friends helped with the rescue of several cold-stunned Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles from Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. The turtles were just some of many that were rescued from the Northeastern cold snap this past fall, which left hundreds of the cold-blooded animals lethargic and immobilized. Since the turtles’ arrival last month, they have been sharing the backstage space at The Seas with Nemo & Friends where cast members conducted daily checks to keep an eye on the turtles’ progression and rehabilitation. The process to warm, rehabilitate and help the turtles regain their strength took several weeks, but success was achieved.
