Walt Disney Imagineering Takes Teens Behind the Scenes

Walt Disney Imagineering is where the magic of Disney’s theme parks, resorts, attractions and ships is dreamed up and brought to life.

Imagineers are extremely passionate about designing and creating immersive, themed experiences, and they’re equally passionate about sharing their creativity and innovation with students interested in the arts and STEM subjects — science, technology, engineering and math.

Recently, hundreds of teens experienced that magic up close. WDI, in association with Maker Faire’s “Maker Camp” – a month-long, virtual DIY camp – and Google+, hosted a live “field trip” of their usually top-secret facilities via Webcast.

During the tour, introduced by Imagineering chief creative executive, Bruce Vaughn, students and other viewers got a glimpse at some of the unique and innovative processes Imagineers use during the design phase of their projects. Of the more than 140 unique Imagineering job disciplines, four were highlighted: dimensional design (model-making, sculpting and rapid-prototyping), robotics design and programming, ride design, and previsualization (virtual experiences of yet-to-be-built attractions and facilities). The tour concluded with students asking Bruce and other Imagineers an array of questions, from highly technical inquiries to career advice.

The event drew rave reviews from the participants — and you can be part of the experience by watching the entire Webcast, which includes the tour and Q&A, on YouTube. Enjoy!
