Any aspiring fashion designer will tell you that real-world experience is one of the best ways to learn. And that’s exactly the type of experience our creative team at Disney Consumer Products is committed to providing to the next generation.
Our latest example is a partnership with Otis College of Art and Design — a Los Angeles-based school that offers more than a dozen programs including Fashion Design, Toy Design and Fine Arts. We partnered with the college to create an educational experience resulting in a one-of-a-kind sportswear collection based on three characters from Disney/Pixar’sMonsters University – Sulley, Mike and Art. Otis alumna Marisol Gerona worked with John Fiscella, director of product innovation at Disney Consumer Products, to mentor Otis fashion students as they brought the designs to life.
During development, the students visited The Walt Disney Studios where they met with Disney designers and artists to learn about the special personalities and of each character. They were directed to design street wear with sustainability for extended use, both athletic and off court, and to reflect the character in the clothing without using the character’s image.
To address sustainability, the students incorporated recycled materials such as household mops, sponges and repurposed fabrics into their designs. Sketch selections, critiques and a final jury selection culminated during a runway show at the Otis Annual Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show in Beverly Hills. The event raised more than $1 million in scholarships for young talent.
The original clothing collection was on display during the premiere of Monster University at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood and will be remain on display through the film’s run at the theatre, June 21 to August 2. If you get a chance, check it out!
