Disney Employees Participate in Canoe Races Around the World

Here at Disney, there are so many activities that bring us together as employees. One event makes a particularly big splash every year — the annual canoe races!

It all began 50 years ago, when something sparked Disneyland Resort cast member Ray Van De Warker’s curiosity.

As a foreman of the Indian War Canoes attraction at Disneyland park, Ray noticed a guest canoe filled with athletes charging around the Rivers of America. This observation commenced a debate between Ray and Jungle Cruise foreman Bob Penfield about how fast their teams could get around the river. That’s when it happened: A challenge was set forth between the Frontierland cast and Adventureland cast!

Today, Disney employees continue to participate in this canoe race challenge, and it’s also paddled its way across the country and even the Pacific Ocean. Cast members and employees from Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort take part in their very own races every year.
