This past weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water became the fourth highest-grossing film worldwide at the global box office, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Nominated for four Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, the film remained No. 1 at the domestic box office after seven weekends in release—a feat that has not been achieved since the original Avatar was released in 2009. Additionally, Avatar: The Way of Water is the second fastest film in history to reach $2 billion (after Avengers: Endgame) and it is now the 11th highest-grossing release of all time domestically.
Avatar: The Way of Water is also the highest-grossing film of all time in France, Austria, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Lebanon, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Cambodia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Colombia, and Puerto Rico. James Cameron has directed three of the top four releases of all time: Avatar (No. 1), Titanic (No. 3), and Avatar: The Way of Water (No. 4).
The Walt Disney Studios has released three of the top five global releases of all time, with Avengers: Endgame (No. 2), Avatar: The Way of Water (No. 4), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (No. 5). It is also now home to Avatar (No. 1) and holds the international distribution rights to Titanic (No. 3), which round out the top five. Of the top 10 global releases of all time, Disney makes up more than half the list with Avengers: Endgame (No. 2), Avatar: The Way of Water (No. 4), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (No. 5), Avengers: Infinity War (No. 6), The Lion King (2019) (No. 9), and Marvel’s The Avengers (No. 10).
