20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment’s Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed $1 billion globally after just 14 days, becoming the fastest release to cross that box office threshold since Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021 and the fastest in 2022. The epic adventure, from visionary filmmaker James Cameron, is the sixth film ever to cross $1 billion in its first two weeks of release and the fourth Disney release to do so.
With $1 billion already earned globally—and before the end of its second week in theaters—Avatar: The Way of Water has passed Jurassic World: Dominion to become the No. 2 release of 2022 and the No. 3 release of the pandemic era. Internationally, it’s closing in on Top Gun: Maverick’s $770 million—which, if crossed, would make Avatar: The Way of Water the No. 1 international release of 2022 and No. 2 international release of the pandemic era.
Domestically, despite the continued disruption caused by Storm Elliott, Avatar: The Way of Water has crossed $300 million. The domestic $24 million Tuesday is +31% ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water’s first Tuesday, now giving the film the No. 1 and No. 2 top-grossing Tuesdays of the year.
