Any filmmaker will tell you that lighting is critical to the storytelling process. But what if you could take the art of lighting from the big screen into your home?
Earlier this month, Disney and Philips announced a line of innovative products designed to bring Disney magic to life through lighting like never before. The technology works like this. Children and their parents can connect e-books to lighting products that change the vibe in a room as a story unfolds. The revolutionary concept makes reading more fun by allowing families to become immersed in the story.
In addition to the e-books product, five other lighting solutions will be available. SleepTime and Mickey uses sun and moon indicators to help kids understand sleep time from wake up time; SoftPals and Monsters introduces just enough light to help kids feel comforted through the night; a Candle Light product emits a warm glow that emulates the flicker of a candle; and two different LivingColors sets include numerous lighting options that allow children to escape to an imaginary world of their own.
Developed at Philips’ facilities in The Netherlands, the new range of breakthrough concepts will roll out in Europe and the U.S. in September – with Asia to follow later in the year.
Because this range of imaginative products is geared toward kids, several child-friendly safety features were incorporated. Smart Philips LED means the lamps are robust yet stay cool to the touch – with the added bonus that they don’t have to be changed often due to extremely long life. Each light is also designed without small parts or sharp edges, and cables can be tidied using velcro cable binders.
At the time of the announcement, Philips Consumer Luminaires CEO Philip Doorduijn shared, “Philips and Disney believe in creating moments and environments that improve people’s wellbeing and happiness. By bringing our collective brand, knowledge and histories together, we have created a range of safe, innovative and dynamic lighting solutions for children, parents and everybody young-at-heart.”
As someone who is personally fascinated by the way lighting sets tone throughout a film, I cannot wait to get an up-close look at the new products this fall!
