Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens today in the U.S. and Canada and is off to an “awesome” start with $17 million in Thursday night previews, the highest of the year.
The film also opens today in China, with numerous markets around the world in full swing. On Wednesday, it posted the highest opening day of 2017 and the biggest May opening day ever in Korea, and yesterday’s opening in Russia nearly matched the opening day of Avengers: Age of Ultron there.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had its first international openings beginning April 25 and has already brought in $167 million in the lead-up to the domestic debut, bolstered by strong May Day holiday performances in several markets. The biggest market to date is the U.K. with $27.6 million, followed by Australia with $14 million and Germany with $13.8 million.
