By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
There’s a common theme in making a difference—creativity. Whether you’re looking to protect the planet, help your community or promote healthy behaviors, your creative ideas can inspire your friends and peers to lend their skills, interests and talents to create a brighter tomorrow. Disney Friends for Change, too, is committed to supporting young leaders in pursuit of making their communities greener, safer, smarter, healthier, cleaner and fairer. Their annual grants program, through a collaboration with leading youth organization Youth Service America, will provide $500 grants to help young dreamers and doers make a lasting, positive change in the world. Projects and initiatives taking place on or around Global Youth Service Day (April 17–19) will highlight the creativity and commitment of young people who work to meet the needs of others.

Disney Publishing Celebrates Author Rick Riordan

By Amelia Lukiman, Disney Consumer Products
As the world’s largest publisher of books and apps for children, Disney Publishing Worldwide has a roster of literary talent that has delighted kids and teens with their stories and characters. Middle-grade author Rick Riordan had a fantastic year in 2014. The Lightning Thief, made into a very successful off-Broadway show for kids, was named by "TIME" magazine as one of the best 100 young adult books of all time. The August publication of "Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods" saw the book hit the top of the "New York Times" middle-grade best-sellers list right out of the gate and was promoted with a once-in-a-lifetime “live from Mt. Olympus” event broadcast from the Empire State Building. The book was a perennial favorite for holiday gift giving and jumped back to the No. 1 spot again just before the end of the year. But the watershed moment for fans was the publication of The Blood of Olympus, which came out in October and was one of the most eagerly awaited books of the year.

Disney Employees Help Sea Turtles Return to Their Natural Habitat

By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
Recently, Disney Animal Programs cast members from Epcot’s The Seas with Nemo & Friends helped with the rescue of several cold-stunned Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles from Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. The turtles were just some of many that were rescued from the Northeastern cold snap this past fall, which left hundreds of the cold-blooded animals lethargic and immobilized. Since the turtles’ arrival last month, they have been sharing the backstage space at The Seas with Nemo & Friends where cast members conducted daily checks to keep an eye on the turtles’ progression and rehabilitation. The process to warm, rehabilitate and help the turtles regain their strength took several weeks, but success was achieved.
