Disney Publishing Celebrates Author Rick Riordan

By Amelia Lukiman, Disney Consumer Products
As the world’s largest publisher of books and apps for children, Disney Publishing Worldwide has a roster of literary talent that has delighted kids and teens with their stories and characters. Middle-grade author Rick Riordan had a fantastic year in 2014. The Lightning Thief, made into a very successful off-Broadway show for kids, was named by "TIME" magazine as one of the best 100 young adult books of all time. The August publication of "Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods" saw the book hit the top of the "New York Times" middle-grade best-sellers list right out of the gate and was promoted with a once-in-a-lifetime “live from Mt. Olympus” event broadcast from the Empire State Building. The book was a perennial favorite for holiday gift giving and jumped back to the No. 1 spot again just before the end of the year. But the watershed moment for fans was the publication of The Blood of Olympus, which came out in October and was one of the most eagerly awaited books of the year.

Disney Employees Help Sea Turtles Return to Their Natural Habitat

By Cynthia Momdjian, The Walt Disney Company
Recently, Disney Animal Programs cast members from Epcot’s The Seas with Nemo & Friends helped with the rescue of several cold-stunned Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles from Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. The turtles were just some of many that were rescued from the Northeastern cold snap this past fall, which left hundreds of the cold-blooded animals lethargic and immobilized. Since the turtles’ arrival last month, they have been sharing the backstage space at The Seas with Nemo & Friends where cast members conducted daily checks to keep an eye on the turtles’ progression and rehabilitation. The process to warm, rehabilitate and help the turtles regain their strength took several weeks, but success was achieved.

Q&A with Zendaya from Disney Channel's Upcoming Series 'K.C. Undercover'

By Nicole Balgemino, Disney/ABC Television Group
On Sunday, January 18 (8:30 p.m. ET/PT), Disney Channel will introduce your favorite new super-spy series, "K.C. Undercover." The live-action comedy for kids, tweens and families stars multi-talented actress and recording artist Zendaya—a Disney veteran, who at 18 years old, has already lent her talents to projects that span the entire Company. Whether starring as Rocky Blue in Disney Channel’s "Shake It Up," making it to the finals on ABC’s "Dancing with the Stars" or releasing her self-titled debut album via Hollywood Records, we thought she’d just about done it all. But this time, Zendaya is not only acting in this new Disney Channel series, she’s also co-producing it. Disney Post recently sat down with the star for a behind-the-scenes look at "K.C. Undercover" and to learn about her co-producing role on the show.

College Football Playoffs National Championship One of Top 20 Most-Viewed Programs in Cable TV History

By Sheldon Spencer, ESPN
For the first time in college football history, the National Champion—the Ohio State Buckeyes—was determined by a Playoff. On January 1, the two semifinal games of the newly established College Football Playoff (CFP) determined which two teams would play for the title. In fantastic, back-to-back games, the Oregon Ducks rolled over the Seminoles from Florida State in the Rose Bowl, and the Buckeyes from The Ohio State University outlasted the Crimson Tide of Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The games proved a ratings bonanza for ESPN—the two semifinal games played on New Year’s Day had an average TV rating of 15.0 and an average audience of 28.2 million viewers. And both games ranked among the highest-rated shows in cable television history. Last night, the Ducks and the Buckeyes dueled in the championship game on ESPN, and for anyone who loves big events, it was an ultimate can’t-miss game. According to Nielsen, the Monday night telecast of the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Presented by AT&T averaged 33,395,000 viewers and an 18.2 US household rating, which beat the New Year’s Day record to deliver both the largest audience and highest rating in cable television history. But there’s another important milestone to highlight. By airing key NFL and college football games throughout last year, ESPN was the most-watched cable network in primetime in 2014. And with the ratings success of the Oregon-Ohio State College Football Playoff National Championship, ESPN telecasts now claim every spot in cable’s all-time Top 20.
