Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Celebrates Lunar New Year

Last week, just in time for Chinese New Year, we shared some exciting news from Shanghai Disney Resort and its Garden of the Twelve Friends—a whimsical area of the theme park that recasts twelve favorite Disney and Disney•Pixar characters as members of the Chinese zodiac. “Jolly Holiday” lambs from Disney’s "Mary Poppins" were selected in honor of the Year of the Sheep. The Garden of the Twelve Friends will feature a garden wall decorated with flowering vines and colorful mosaic vignettes created in collaboration with local Chinese artists and craftsmen, and will resemble a classic Chinese garden where families can gather and relax together.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Takes Steps Towards an Eco-Friendly Future

Last week, the Disneyland Resort was honored with a Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award, California’s highest environmental honor, for waste-reduction efforts. The program distinguishes organizations that are leaders in environmental stewardship and that make notable efforts to conserve California’s natural resources. Over the last 10 years, the Disneyland Resort has doubled the amount of waste diverted from landfills, and is working toward the long-term goal of achieving Zero Waste—a distinction already awarded to Circle D Corral at Disneyland park. In addition to recycling paper, cardboard, plastics and metal, Circle D Corral composts all animal waste, hand towels, laundry lint and coffee grounds from Disneyland Resort restaurants.

Disney News This Week: ABC to Air Special on Disney Theatrical Productions, New 'Cinderella' Trailer Released, Two New Hotels and Disneytown Announced for Shanghai Disney Resort

In celebration of Disney Theatrical Productions' 20 years on Broadway, the ABC Television Network will air "Backstage with Disney on Broadway: Celebrating 20 Years, airing" on Sunday, December 14 at 7 p.m. ET and hosted by Broadway veteran Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of ABC's "Modern Family." This one-hour special, produced by Lincoln Square Productions, takes viewers on a journey through the creation of Disney's eight Broadway musicals: "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "AIDA," "Tarzan," "The Little Mermaid," "Mary Poppins," "Newsies" and "Aladdin." The ABC special features new commentary and revealing anecdotes by the stars and theatre professionals about the creation and long runs of these beloved titles.

Disney's 'The Lion King' Coming to Shanghai Disney Resort, ESPN and Google Collaborate for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Josh Trank to Direct Stand-Alone 'Star Wars' Film

Shanghai Disney Resort and Disney Theatrical Productions announced today that Disney’s landmark musical event, "The Lion King," is coming to the Walt Disney Grand Theatre—a new, world-class, 1,200-seat Broadway-style theater, to be located at Shanghai Disney Resort’s retail, dining and entertainment area—currently under construction adjacent to Shanghai Disneyland park. This will be the world’s first production of "The Lion King"—Julie Taymor's production, exactly as seen on Broadway and in productions around the world—performed in Mandarin.

Shanghai Disneyland's Treasure Cove Unveiled

On this day in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean debuted at Disneyland in Anaheim. Nearly 50 years later, as part of The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger unveiled creative details including the first-ever Pirates-themed land and a new Pirates of the Caribbean attraction designed for the Shanghai Disney Resort.
